What it represents
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum total weight the trailer may weigh when loaded, established by the manufacturer based on frame, axles, suspension, tires, and brakes working together.
Why the weakest link governs
Two 3,500 lb axles do not automatically mean a 7,000 lb GVWR. If the frame, tires, or coupler are rated lower, the GVWR reflects that lower limit. The certification label is authoritative.
Consequences of exceeding it
Overloading extends stopping distance, overheats tires and bearings, cracks frames, and can void insurance coverage or shift liability after an accident.
Finding your numbers
The federal certification label on the driver-side front of the trailer lists GVWR and axle ratings. Photograph it and keep a copy in your truck.
