The Texas Trailer Buying Guide
Everything that actually determines whether a trailer fits your work: sizing, weight ratings, axles, brakes, maintenance, safety, and the difference between residential and commercial duty.
Section 01
How to choose trailer size
Start with measurements, not opinions. Write down the length, width, height, and weight of the five loads you haul most often, then size the trailer for the largest of those five. Buying for a once-a-year oversize job usually means towing an oversized trailer for the other 51 weeks.
Add roughly two feet of deck beyond your longest regular load. That margin gives you room to shift cargo forward for correct tongue weight, room for straps and chains, and room for ramps when they are stored on the deck.
Then check the constraints around the trailer: your driveway or yard, gate widths, storage rules, and the tow vehicle. A 24-foot gooseneck is useless if it cannot be parked where you live or maneuvered where you work.
Common size starting points
- 6x12 single or tandem: homeowner and light contractor work
- 7x16 tandem: landscape crews and general jobsite hauling
- 18' to 20' car hauler: vehicles and light equipment
- 20' to 22' equipment trailer: skid steers and compact machines
- 30' to 40' gooseneck: heavy equipment, hay, and hot shot freight
Section 02
GVWR explained
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum weight a trailer may weigh when fully loaded, including the trailer's own weight. It is set by the manufacturer based on the weakest element in the system: frame, axles, springs, tires, wheels, coupler, and brakes.
Payload is simply GVWR minus curb weight. A 14,000 lb GVWR equipment trailer that weighs 3,800 lbs empty carries 10,200 lbs of cargo. That number, not the axle rating, is what you compare against your machine's operating weight.
Exceeding GVWR is not a technicality. It lengthens stopping distances, overheats tires and bearings, fatigues frames, and can shift liability onto you after an incident. The federal certification label on the driver-side front of the trailer is the authoritative source for these numbers.
Ratings worth memorizing
- GVWR: maximum loaded trailer weight
- GAWR: maximum weight per axle
- GCWR: maximum combined truck and trailer weight
- Payload: GVWR minus empty trailer weight
- Tongue weight: 10-15% bumper pull, 20-25% gooseneck pin
Section 03
Axles and suspension
Single axle trailers are lighter, cheaper, and easy to move by hand, which suits payloads under roughly 3,000 lbs. Tandem axles distribute weight, track more steadily at highway speed, and let you limp to a shop after a tire failure. Most commercial buyers should choose tandem.
Leaf spring suspensions equalize load between tandem axles and can be repaired in nearly any Texas town. Torsion axles ride more smoothly, lower the deck, and need less maintenance, but the entire axle is replaced when the rubber cords degrade.
Hub choice matters on long hauls. Easy-lube hubs let you add grease through the spindle; oil-bath hubs let you check the level visually and generally run cooler on interstate distances.
Axle selection rules
- Match axle capacity to GVWR, never above the frame rating
- Choose tandem axles above 3,000 lbs of payload
- Torsion for smooth ride and low deck height
- Leaf springs for heavy, repairable commercial duty
- Verify spring rating matches axle rating
Section 04
Brakes
Texas generally requires brakes on trailers with a gross weight above 4,500 lbs, and trailers above 15,000 lbs require brakes on all wheels plus a breakaway system. Treat those as minimums rather than targets.
Electric drum brakes are the standard on utility, landscape, dump, and equipment trailers. They rely on an in-cab controller whose gain should be set with a loaded test stop so the trailer begins braking just before the truck.
Electric over hydraulic disc brakes cost more but deliver substantially better stopping power and heat resistance on heavy goosenecks and equipment trailers, which matters on long grades and in stop-and-go metro traffic.
Brake system checklist
- Brakes on both axles, not just one, for tandem trailers
- Breakaway battery tested monthly
- Controller gain set with a loaded stop
- Magnets and shoes inspected annually
- Disc brakes considered above 14,000 lbs GVWR
Section 05
Trailer maintenance
Trailers fail from neglect far more than from wear. Bearings, brakes, tires, wiring, and coatings account for nearly every roadside failure, and all five respond well to a simple schedule.
Repack bearings annually or every 12,000 miles. Replace ST tires at five to seven years regardless of tread depth, because UV and ozone degrade the sidewall long before the tread wears. Inspect brake magnets and shoes each year and adjust as needed.
Protect the steel. Rinse the frame after exposure to fertilizer, salt, or heavy mud, touch up chips immediately, and keep the inside of tube frames drained. In Texas humidity, a small paint chip becomes structural rust faster than most owners expect.
Maintenance intervals
- Every trip: lights, tires, coupler, chains, breakaway, load
- Monthly: tire condition, breakaway battery, grease points
- Annually: bearings, brakes, suspension hardware, wiring
- 5-7 years: replace trailer tires by date code
- Ongoing: touch up coating damage immediately
Section 06
Trailer safety
Securement is governed by physics and regulation, and both agree: the aggregate working load limit of your tie-downs should be at least half the cargo weight, and machinery over 10,000 lbs requires four independent tie-downs plus separate securement for attachments.
Tongue weight is the other half of safety. Load roughly 60 percent of the weight forward of the trailer's center, keep it low and centered, and confirm you are within 10 to 15 percent tongue weight for a bumper pull. Rear-biased loads are the leading cause of sway.
If sway begins, do not brake hard or steer sharply. Ease off the throttle, hold the wheel steady, apply the trailer brakes manually if your controller supports it, then stop and rebalance before continuing.
Non-negotiable safety items
- Correct ball size, latched and pinned coupler
- Safety chains crossed beneath the tongue
- Breakaway cable attached to the truck, not the chains
- Rated straps or Grade 70 chain for the load
- Re-check tension within the first 25 miles

Commercial vs residential use
Duty cycle, not mileage, determines how a trailer wears. A commercial crew loads and unloads dozens of times a week, cycling ramp hinges, gate springs, deck boards, and tie-down points thousands of times a year that a residential trailer will never see.
Commercial buyers should step up frame gauge, add brakes on all axles, choose heavier ramps and gates, and include a spare tire and mount. These upgrades are marginal against the purchase price and decisive by year three.
Business use also brings compliance obligations: DOT securement standards, potential roadside inspections, commercial insurance, and in some configurations, licensing requirements. Build those costs into the purchase decision rather than discovering them later.
