The two questions that control the process
First determine whether the trailer is manufactured or assembled. Then determine its gross weight: empty weight plus rated carrying capacity. TxDMV says non-farm trailers operated on public highways must be registered. A manufactured trailer over 4,000 pounds gross weight must be titled; at 4,000 pounds or less, a title is generally optional unless the trailer was titled previously.
Document checklist
- Form 130-U, Application for Texas Title and/or Registration.
- Manufacturer Certificate of Origin for a new manufactured trailer.
- Texas or out-of-state title for a used trailer when a title was issued or is required.
- Bill of sale and prior registration receipt for a qualifying lighter used trailer.

Assembled trailers and missing VINs
A manufactured trailer with missing paperwork cannot simply be described as homemade. Newly assembled trailers may require a law-enforcement identification-number inspection and an assigned VIN. Photograph the frame, tongue, manufacturer plate, serial numbers, and receipts before beginning the process, then confirm the exact sequence with a TxDMV Regional Service Center.
Farm-trailer exceptions
Farm trailers have separate thresholds and use restrictions. TxDMV describes exemptions for qualifying farm trailers and a Farm Trailer plate for eligible agricultural use. Do not assume that owning land or carrying equipment automatically qualifies; confirm the trailer's weight and actual use with the county tax assessor-collector.
